*** Résumé en anglais seulement *** LIVE BROADCAST FROM JAPAN TOUR 1985 Having sold more than 12 million records worldwide across their quite staggering career thus far, Dream Theater maintain with ease their position as the kings of progressive metal, remaining leagues apart from their contemporaries. And with guitarist John Petrucci, founding drummer Mike Portnoy, and keyboard player Jordan Rudess, considered to be among the greatest players of the era, the band s reputation for technical wizardry and first rate musicianship is without contest. By the mid-1990s, Dream Theater was at a major turning point. In the wake of their Gold-certified 1992 album Images and Words, extensive touring had left the band yearning to start on fresh material. In February 1994, the group began work on their third album, Awake. However, the recording sessions were marred by bickering within the band, and the success of the single Pull Me Under brought pressure from their label, East West, to repeat the fortunes of such. A heavier, darker album to tie in with the popularity of alternative and groove metal, fashionable during the early part of the decade, was not just expected but nigh on demanded. To make matters worse, shortly before the mixing stage, founding keyboard player Kevin Moore quit the group, citing personal differences plus a desire to work on his own projects. Despite these hurdles, Awake was considered by Dream Theater fans to be one of the group s finest records, an opinion that still holds strong. They auditioned Jordan Rudess to replace Moore, with Portnoy calling him the best keyboard player we d ever seen . However Rudess was uncertain about joining initially and held out until 1999, when he finally became a full-time member. In the meantime, they enlisted Derek Sherinian - a former Berklee College of Music classmate of Petrucci, Protnoy and Moore - who had previously played for Alice Cooper and KISS. The Awake tour was as affected by misfortune as the album s recording had been, which included lead singer Kevin LaBrie rupturing his vocal cords after a bout of food poisoning over Christmas 1994. The band struggled on however, like the professionals they have always been, but on reaching Japan in early 1995 they witnessed the Great Hanshin earthquake on 17th January. Although they considered cancelling their pre-booked Japanese dates, they decided to continue, holding a minute s silence before each show in honour of those killed, injured or otherwise affected by the turmoil. Dream Theater s show at the Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo on 24th January was recorded and broadcast in the finest audio quality over local FM radio, and is contained in its full glory on this double CD set for the first time. Including a superb selection of tracks from their current album and back catalogue, this recording goes to prove that, despite the hardships they faced, Dream Theater remain one of the most professional, talented and enduring acts in the business.
