METALLICA S FULL PERFORMANCE, ACROSS 2 DISCS, OF THEIR LEGENDARY WOODSTOCK '94 PERFORMANCE The first half of the 1990s was a period of mixed blessings for Metallica, who by the middle of the decade had established themselves as one of the most unstoppable forces in metal. On 12th August 1990 the band had released Metallica, commonly known amongst fans and critics as The Black Album. The recording sessions had been a harrowing experience for all involved however; the group argued endlessly with producer Bob Rock over the sound of the record, and the countless takes and remixing costing in excess of $1 million in studio time. Furthermore, the strain of the sessions were certainly contributing factors in James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and James Newsted all getting divorced during the recording. In spite of this though, the album s slower-paced heavy sound struck a chord with fans old and new, and the LP would become their most successful to date. Metallica reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 and remained there for four weeks; their first album to top the US charts - a position the album repeated in a further nine countries upon its release. The album has spent a total 376 weeks on the chart and went 16 x Platinum in the United States alone. It also spawned some of Metallica s best-known songs, including Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters . To capitalise on the success of the album, Metallica embarked on a mammoth series of live performances, staging over 350 gigs across three tours. Although, following the release Metallica. there were no further group albums for almost five years, the well-received documentary film, A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica, in 1992, and the live album, Live Shit: Binge & Purge, in 1993, kept fans somewhat fulfilled. Metallica performed at the Woodstock 94 festival on Saturday 13th August, alongside Nine Inch Nails, Aerosmith and the Rollins Band, and showed no trace of tour fatigue as they produced a show generally considered to be one of their best ever. Broadcast live on local FM radio and containing cuts from their entire back catalogue, including Master Of Puppets , For Whom The Bell Tolls , One and Enter Sandman , this two disc collection captures their entire Woodstock performance which finds Metallica at the point at which they joined the mega-league of rock bands.
