Résumé
This book is a translation of the author’s original French manuscript. In recounting the story of his legendary Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz and Blues Club, Doudou regales the reader with juicy anecdotes about the renowned artists who became his personal friends over the eighteen years of the club’s existence. He also talks about his clashes with the Guild of Musicians of Quebec and the consistent refusal of various levels of government to grant him financial assistance. The author has written this book in order to present the true story of Montreal’s first international jazz and blues festival, the Rising Sun Festijazz, which was held at Place des Arts in 1978. “The festival movement in Canada began in earnest in 1978 with the first Festijazz organized by Doudou Boicel at Place des Arts.” (Encyclopedia of Music in Canada). The Festijazz was the inspiration behind major jazz and blues festivals all over the globe. Doudou Boicel, an artist and poet committed to the worldwide promotion of black culture, has himself become a legend.
